Amanda Becker, Deputy District Attorney, Jefferson County

Amanda Becker

District Attorney's Animal Abuse Division

Amanda Becker, a Deputy District Attorney in Jefferson County, designed the Animal Abuse Division to support and train police officers and animal control workers in their investigations of animal abuse cases. She explained the importance of these cases to the community and the difficulties in prosecuting some of them.

Amanda highlighted the direct link between animal abuse and domestic violence. For instance, in homes with domestic violence, 50% of children reported that the abuser threatened to harm or kill a beloved animal to maintain control over their human victims. Studies have also shown that approximately one-third of battered women have delayed their escape out of fear for their animals. Children who exhibit cruelty towards animals are more than twice as likely to have suffered maltreatment themselves. Moreover, many seniors and disabled adults are vulnerable to abuse at the hands of caregivers, putting the companion animals of elderly persons at risk as well. More than 35% of adult protective services workers report that their clients have talked about their companion animals being threatened, injured, killed, or denied care by a caregiver.

Amanda emphasized that training police officers and animal control workers is a crucial part of their investigations to charge offenders for animal abuse. Since animals cannot explain what happened, it is important for investigating officers to collect enough evidence to convince a jury beyond all doubt that the animal was being abused.

JOIN US FOR PANCAKES WITH SANTA December 2 at the Cross of Christ Lutheran Church from 7 to 10 a.m.

This is a wonderful opportunity for our Scouts to provide a festive breakfast with Santa and support a good cause. All the money raised will go to the Broomfield Rotary Charitable Foundation, which helps many local and global projects. Our Scouts will be busy making pancakes, clearing tables, and providing friendly service to our guests.

Dear Ben Vagher,

Happy November District 5450 Club Rotary Foundation Chairs and Club Presidents.

In November, Rotary members celebrate The Rotary Foundation. It’s a great time to share with your members how the Foundation transforms its gifts into service projects that change lives both close to home and around the world.

Celebrate Rotary Foundation month.

In November, we celebrate the impact that The Rotary Foundation has in supporting grants and other projects around the world. During Rotary Foundation Month, you have several opportunities to get involved in raising awareness and funds for our Foundation.

  1. Support our Foundation on Giving Tuesday, 28 November. Make a gift (https://my.rotary.org/en/giving-tuesday) to The Rotary Foundation, and share your support on social media. The top clubs in fundraising, participation, and online giving will be featured on My Rotary. Here are last year’s honorees. (https://my.rotary.org/en/rotary-foundation-raises-more-1-million-giving-tuesday)
  2. Share our impact. This is the video that Ben tried to show on Thursday.  Click here and take two minutes to view it.    (https://shorturl.at/bmHZ7) that shows how the Foundation transforms gifts into service projects that advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace by fighting disease, improving the quality of education, protecting the environment, alleviating poverty, and doing even more.
  3. Thank our donors. The Rotary Foundation will be sending special thank-you messages to donors around the world throughout November, but we hope you thank members of your community who participate in service projects. Take a moment to write a quick thank-you note or recognize Foundation supporters during a club meeting. Attached are a couple of logo files to use in letters and cards or presentations.
  4. Give the gift of Rotary. Make an impact in communities around the world by joining members who give the gift of Rotary (https://my.rotary.org/en/give-gift-rotary). Your gift helps create lasting change, from supplying filters that purify drinking water to providing vital medical equipment to neonatal intensive care units. You can share information about Give the Gift  (see attached flyer) with fellow members and other prospective donors.

Thanks so much to the clubs that have had us for presentations in person, via hybrid, and via Zoom.

Please let us know how else the District 5450 Foundation Team can support you during Rotary Foundation Month.

It is OUR FOUNDATION, so let's support it as we know we can.

Best in Rotary,

David “Willy” Willman

D5450 The Rotary Foundation Chair
