THE NEWSLETTER OF THE BROOMFIELD ROTARY CLUB
June 1, 2023 Club Meeting
Guest Speaker: Chris & Katelyn Hinkley

Retired Police officer Chris Hinkley and his daughter, Katelyn, delivered their inspiring thanks to the Broomfield Rotary for supporting the Tom Deland Fire and Police Fund.  While on duty Chris was involved a trafic accident.  The collision broke his back, both legs, his hand and caused sever brain trauma.  After extensive physical therapy he returned to work for a short time before being forced to retire.
Chris shared how he was drowning in debt because his forced retirement pay had not yet been approved.  It took several months to get the many doctors involved in his recovery to attest to the need for his forced retirement. This is when the Broomfield Rotary Fire and Police Fund stepped in to help.
Next,  his daughter Katelyn also thanked to the Rotary for the scholarship she received from the Rotary Fire and Police Fund.  The scholarship made it possible for to finish her college degree at DU.  She is now working hard on a predental degree.

Guest Speaker: Charly Frisk

Charly Frisk, daughter of fellow Rotarian Lauren Robydek, shared her experiences in Scandinavia and the Artic Circle where she was able to study worldwide efforts to save our biodiversity in plant life by storing and growing different seeds.  Charley shared slides of her trip to the Svalbard Global Seed Vault where millions of seeds are stored from around the world.  She also explained how saving the seeds is not enough if no one knows how to grow them.
Her studies introduced her to many horticulturists and farmers throughout Scandinavia working to understand the genetics of these different seeds by growing them.  She went on to explain how important it is to understand these differences as climate change destroys many of our important food crops.

Great Suggestions from Gary Francis:  The Rotarian responsible for the presenter would write up a short paragraph thanking, and outlining the presentation, in any word form, to be published in our Weekly News Letter.

Great to see Gerry Case back!
