At our Club meeting on February 19, 2026, Scott Somes provided the moving story behind the Colorado Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation (“CBCAF”). Scott is a graduate of George Washington High School in Denver. After serving in the U.S. Navy for some 36 years, he retired as a Captain. About 8 years ago, Scott’s wife Chrstina was diagnosed with breast cancer, something approximately one in eight women in the U.S. will experience. Christina found that talking to others going through a similar ordeal was very helpful to her in beating breast cancer and all that involves. This motivated Scott and Christina to form the CBCAF, which is a 501(c)(3).
The CBCAF provides support to women who live in Colorado, are being treated for breast cancer and have financial need. In order to qualify, an applicant must (i) provide certification from an Oncologist that they are undergoing treatment for breast cancer, (ii) demonstrate that they have financial need and (iii) live in Colorado. Once applicants are accepted, CBCAF offers them assistance with life challenges while they are undergoing treatment. For example, the CBCAF has provided women and their families with meals, transportation and help with rent to name a few. Scott also is an acupuncturist who provides acupuncture services to address pain and other side effects that breast cancer treatments can produce.
The CBCAF raises funds via an annual golf tournament and a pickleball tournament, as well as from direct donations received via its web site. The golf tournament raises some $70,000 - $85,000 per year. Thus far, CBCAF has awarded approximately $450,000 in grants to Colorado women undergoing breast cancer treatments.
