Daring Girls, By Jessica Love
July 27: If you missed last Thursday's meeting, you missed an outstanding presentation by Jessica Love, Executive Director of Daring Girls.  Jessica Discussed Daring Girl's Transformational Mentorship Programs in Tanzania.
In Tanzania, only 39% of girls are fortunate enough to attend secondary school, and less than 3% continue on to tertiary education. Girls grow up believing that being confident and determined is rude, that asking questions signals a lack of good manners, and that they have little worth beyond serving as a wife and mother. Denver-based Daring Girls has been working in Tanzania since 2001 to change this narrative by promoting education through UNESCO Award Winning extracurricular mentorship programming that develops girls into leaders who transform their own lives and communities. The organization launched in 2001 thanks to generous support from the Evergreen Rotary, which was impressed by the passion and initiative taken by Daring Girls' founder, Ashley Shuyler, who was only 16 years old at the time.
Each week, secondary school girls gather in a supportive environment to learn from a successful, university educated woman mentor who exemplifies what they can become. As a result, girls become more resilient, more confident, and more prepared to set and reach their goals. Graduates of this programming have become lawyers, medical researchers, business leaders, entrepreneurs, and so much more. They are earning income that enables them to make their own decisions about their lives and futures.
Affordable and far-reaching, these mentoring programs have touched the lives of more than 17,000 Tanzanian girls at an average cost of $100 per girl for a full year of mentorship programming.
