At our regular Club meeting on April 23, 2026, we heard from Marrton Dormish and Laura Harney of the Broomfield Housing Stability Task Force. The Task Force is made up of 12 volunteers including Dormish and Harney. Its mission is to generate new funding sources to support some 40+ organizations that participate in the Broomfield Housing Solutions Forum. Members of the Forum provide services and products aimed at improving housing stability in Broomfield. Forum members include Broomfield Fish, Senior Resources Broomfield and the Broomfield Department of Human Services, to name a few.
The problem of housing instability in Broomfield is complex. According to recent studies, there are currently approximately 300 unhoused people in Bromfield, many of them elderly and children. Many of them live in their cars, trucks or RVs, or move frequently from place to place. Therefore, most of them are not visible to us. The actual total is probably much higher than the 300 that have been identified. Experience has shown that homeless people tend to stay where they are from. That means that most of the 300 are probably from Broomfield and surrounding areas. Additionally, a much larger number of Broomfielders are barely maintaining stable housing. These include some 3200 households that are paying 75% or more of their monthly income for housing. Additionally, some one in five (20%) of Broomfielders rely on Fish to one degree or another.
Members of the Task Force support not only unhoused Broomfielders, but also those whose housing is not secure. There is no silver bullet that can meet all of their needs, which are varied and complex. That is why some 40+ agencies work to serve the unhoused and housing insecure in Broomfield. Currently, there is an estimated shortfall of eleven million dollar per year ($11,000,000/yr) between the cumulative need and the funds available to meet the need.
