Broomfield Rotary Supports Local Churches in a Successful C.R.O.P. Walk. (C.R.O.P.=Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty)

Organized by Vicki Satrom, The 2010 5k C.R.O.P. walk was held at Midway Park on September 25th. This year's walk honored two long time Broomfield residents, Shirley Mc Guinness, founder of the Broomfield FISH in 1969 and Reverend Jon Almgren who initiated the Broomfield C.R.O.P. walk in 1988. Both, of these individuals gave years of their lives to those in need in our community. Both Jon and Shirley served with loving care, providing the basic needs to help sustain both families and individuals until their recent deaths. As a minister, Jon gave generously of himself to his fellow parishioners, and, as the director of FISH, Shirley was always available to nurture and encourage her clients.

Over 100 Broomfield citizens, including members from six local churches, took part in this year's event with help from volunteers, Sarah Peterson, and Ellie McKinley. Members the Broomfield Rotary Evening Club were there to help with the organizing and to take part in the walk. This year's successful walk was a celebration of twenty-two years of C.R.O.P. Walks, and a reminder of the hunger and poverty that continues to exist in communities in every country of the world. This year's event raised a total of $7448.00 that will be added to the Crop Walk Funds earned worldwide to help feed those who would go hungry without help. In addition to the money raised by the Walk, 140 pounds of food was collected and donated to Broomfield F.I.S.H. Crop Walkers included 69 active participants ranging in age from 1 ÃÆ'Æ'‚ÃÆ'‚½ to 82 years young. The Event winner, crossing the finish line first, was Pastor Greg Garland of the United Church of Broomfield. Awards were also given to the youngest and oldest walker.

Cross of Christ Lutheran Church was the winner of this years Traveling Trophy for raising $3657.00 to date. Vicki Satrom awarded the trophy. The Broomfield Evening Rotary Club also made a cash contribution to this worthy cause in the name of Shirley McGuiness and Jon. Rev Jon Almgren was a Rotarian until he had to resign because of his health.

The Broomfield Community will miss both Shirley McGuiness and Jon Almgren and their dedication to those they served. The entire organizing committee and all volunteers extend their thanks for a job well done.

Contributions are still being accepted by the organizing committee.
