Joe Mazzola hits a home run at the 2008 District 5450 Conference in Vail.

Congratulations to Joe Mazzola for being selected as the winner of the Active Senior Rotarian of the Year for 2008. The award was presented to Joe by Dave Beall (District 5450 Governor) and Kimberly Armitage (President of the Aurora Club) at the District Conference in Vail, Colorado on Friday evening, April 25.

Joe earned this award for his outstanding contributions to the Broomfield Rotary in 2008. As most of you know, Joe is currently the club's International Chairman where he sees that the club remains active in water projects throughout the world. Joe is also our Public Relations guy and as such has been very successful in getting all of our major activities appropriate press coverage.

But what makes all of us within the Broomfield Rotary particularly proud of Joe is his most recent accomplishment. Joe led the effort to establish the Broomfield Rotary Charitable Foundation. I, along with a number of others,   worked with Joe on this project and as a consequence, I know first hand the effort Joe put in on this endeavor. Joe spent the better part of a year to complete this project. In addition to his other responsibilities, Joe serves as a director on the Foundation's Board.

The Foundation allows all of our fund raising activities to be under the umbrella of a "501c3" corporation which means all contributions to the Foundation are tax deductible. The Foundation was officially certified by the IRS in July of last year and has already awarded over $25,000 in grants. The Foundation will also be making a substantial contribution to Rotary International Foundation by matching member donations to RI.

Way to go Joe, you have set a fine example for us all.
