To truly understand the U.S. Constitution, it’s important to first grasp the Declaration of Independence, as many constitutional ideas stem from concerns outlined in the Declaration. These documents reflect a shift in authority from the government to the people, influenced by political philosophers like Rousseau, John Locke, and Thomas Hobbes, who introduced the concept of the social contract. This theory posits that the authority to govern comes from the people, not a supreme being, suggesting that individuals agree to give up some freedoms for an ordered society. The balance between individual liberties and government authority, which began in the 1700s, remains a topic of discussion today, especially during election seasons.
