At our regular Club meeting on September 9, 2026, Kevin Townsend introduced Augustine Mumia Wanyama, who provided a moving update on the Global Mind Education Centre. Wanyama started the Centre in 2021 in the Kayole slum in Matopeni Village, Nairobi, Kenya. The goal of the Centre and its organization, Global Mind Hope, was to provide a quality education to local children.

In 2023, according to Wanyama, “the government destroyed the school”. At the time, the school had only 8 teachers and 23 students. Global Mind Hope set about to rebuild the school in 2024 and to raise funds necessary for the project (beginning of rebuilding pictured left). The school re-started from a home. Today, the school (building pictured center, inside corridor pictured right) boasts 252 learners, 15 teachers and 4 non-teacher staff. The school serves students at the elementary and middle levels, providing them with education in English and Swahili. Subjects taught include chemistry and biology. The school recently acquired its first microscope. Older students receive HP laptops and Gideon’s Bibles. The school now has running water, including working sinks and toilets. Some of the students had never experienced working sinks or toilets prior to coming to the school. The school also provides all students with a cooked breakfast and lunch Monday through Friday, when the students attend school. For some of these without parents, the meals provided by the school might be only meals they eat all week, as they must scavenge for food on weekends.
Global Mind Hope plans to open another school in Uganda, which will emphasize vocational skills. For more information on the school and the organization, visit Home - GlobalMindHope.
